How to Convert USD to USDT and USDC: Business Guide

If your business pays suppliers, settles with partners, or holds treasury in stablecoins, you first need to turn US dollars into USDT or USDC.

This guide covers the three ways to make that conversion, what each one costs, and how to set it up for regular volume.

What Is a USD to Stablecoin Conversion?

A USD to stablecoin conversion turns US dollars in a bank account into USDT or USDC in a wallet you control. You wire the dollars to an issuer, an OTC desk, or an exchange. That provider converts them at a quoted rate and sends the stablecoins on the network you choose, such as Ethereum, Tron, or Solana. Providers that do this for businesses are often called stablecoin on-ramps.

The cost has three parts: your bank's fee for the wire, the spread and fee in the conversion rate, and the network fee to deliver the stablecoins. The timing depends mostly on the wire, because US dollar wires only move on business days.

US dollar wires only settle on business days, while the conversion runs as soon as the dollars arrive and the stablecoins reach your wallet within minutes

Three Ways to Convert USD to USDT and USDC

You can mint stablecoins with the issuer, buy them from an OTC desk or on/off-ramp provider, or buy them on an exchange.

1. Mint with the issuer. Tether issues USDT to verified accounts. According to Tether's fee page, the minimum is $100,000, each purchase costs 0.1%, and account verification costs $150. Circle issues USDC through Circle Mint, which serves institutions such as exchanges, banks, and wallet providers. Opening an account can take several weeks.

2. Buy from an OTC desk or on/off-ramp provider. You request a quote, lock the rate, and wire the dollars. The provider sends the stablecoins once your wire arrives. This route suits businesses that convert often or in size, because the rate is agreed before you send funds. The Codex FX stablecoin on/off-ramp works this way: you lock one all-in rate, with our fee included, before you fund.

3. Buy on an exchange. You deposit dollars, buy on the order book, and withdraw to your own wallet. Large orders can move the price, and your funds sit on the exchange until you withdraw them.

Is It Cheaper to Mint or Buy in the Market?

It depends on where the market price sits that day and on each route's fees. Minting costs $1 per USDT plus Tether's 0.1% fee. In the market, USDT usually traded a little below $1. Over the year to November 1, 2026, Kraken's USDT/USD market closed below $1 on about 85% of days, and its median daily close sat about 6 bps below $1. It closed 10 bps or more below $1 on about one day in four, but 15 bps or more below on only 4% of days.

USDT closed below $1 on 85% of days in the year to November 1, 2026: 5 bps or more below on 53%, 10 bps or more on 26% and 15 bps or more on 4% (Kraken daily closes)

USDC sat closer to $1, with a median close about 2 bps below on the same market. Exchange and OTC prices also carry a spread and fees, so compare the all-in rate of each route on the same day. Our guide to comparing stablecoin conversion quotes shows how.

Which Network Should You Receive On?

Receive on the network your counterparties use. A stablecoin on one network can only be sent on that network, so moving it to another takes an exchange or a bridge provider.

Most USDC sits on Ethereum. In November 2026, Ethereum held about 62% of the $71 billion of USDC in circulation, according to DefiLlama. USDT is split differently, with about 52% on Tron and 39% on Ethereum. Our guide to USDT payments for business compares the USDT networks and their fees.

More than 60% of all USDC is on Ethereum (61.6%). Solana holds 9.6%, Hyperliquid 9.3%, Base 6.1% and all other networks 13.4% (DefiLlama, November 2026)

Before you lock a quote, check that your provider delivers on that network. Send a small test transfer to each new address.

How to Set Up Regular Conversions

Setting up regular USD to stablecoin conversions takes five steps.

1. Complete KYB. Every provider verifies your business before the first trade. Have your company documents, ownership details, and expected volumes ready.

2. Register your wallets. Add a receiving address for each network you use, and keep a list of approved addresses.

3. Agree how quotes work. Ask for a firm, all-in rate, how long it holds, and when you must fund it.

4. Time your wires. Fedwire runs from 9:00 p.m. ET the evening before to 7:00 p.m. ET on business days, according to the Federal Reserve. Customer transfers must go in by 6:45 p.m. ET. A wire sent after the cut-off or at the weekend settles on the next business day. Our guide to stablecoin use cases charts this weekend gap.

5. Reconcile every trade. Keep the wire reference, the rate, and the transaction hash together, so your books match your bank statements.
