USDT Payments for Business: Costs, Networks, and Setup

If your customers or suppliers hold USDT, they will ask to settle payments in it.

This guide explains how USDT payments work, what they cost, and how to set them up.

What Is a USDT Payment?

A USDT payment is a transfer of Tether's dollar stablecoin from one blockchain address to another. Each USDT is designed to hold a value of one US dollar. Tether holds reserves to back it. The accounting firm BDO attests to those reserves every quarter. A payment settles on the blockchain within minutes, at any hour.

USDT is the largest stablecoin. More than $180 billion of USDT was in circulation in October 2026, according to DefiLlama. That is nearly 60% of all stablecoins. It is also roughly two and a half times the supply of USDC. If you also work with USDC, see our guide to USDC payments for business.

Nearly 60% of all stablecoins are USDT (59.9%). USDC is 23.7%, USDS 2.3%, DAI 1.5% and all others 12.6% (DefiLlama, October 2026)

Which Network Should You Use for USDT?

Use the network your counterparty already uses. USDT is issued separately on each blockchain. One USDT on Tron is worth the same as one USDT on Ethereum, but a payment sent on Tron can only arrive on Tron.

Most USDT sits on two networks. Tron holds just over half of it, and Ethereum holds about 40%.

More than half of all USDT is on Tron (50.6%). Ethereum holds 39.9%, BNB Chain 5.0%, Solana 1.5% and all other networks 3.0% (DefiLlama, October 2026)

Each network charges its fee in its own token. The figures below are for one USDT transfer on October 19, 2026. They come from onchain data and CoinGecko prices.

  • Tron: a transfer uses about 64,000 units of network "energy". A sender without staked TRX burns about 6.4 TRX for it, roughly $2.10. Sending to an address that has never held USDT costs about twice as much.
  • Ethereum: fees are paid in ETH and rise when the network is busy. Recent USDT transfers cost a median of about $0.16.
  • Solana: a transfer costs a fraction of a cent. But only 1.5% of USDT is on Solana.

Frequent senders on Tron often stake TRX or rent energy instead, which costs less. To move USDT to another network, you can use an exchange or a bridge provider. Codex FX also bridges USDT between Ethereum, Tron, and Solana. The fee is quoted upfront and billed separately.

What Do USDT Payments Cost?

A USDT payment costs a network fee plus the cost of converting between USDT and fiat. The network fee is usually the smaller part.

The spread and fees sit in the two conversions: buying USDT and selling it each cost a spread and fees, while sending it cost $0.16 to $2.10 in network fees on October 19, 2026

You can buy and redeem USDT directly with Tether, but only through a verified account. According to Tether's fee schedule, the minimum is $100,000. Each redemption costs 0.1% or $1,000, whichever is greater. Below that size, you need an OTC desk or an on/off-ramp provider. Their cost is the spread in the rate plus any fees. Compare the all-in rate on each quote.

A bank wire is slower and often costs more. An international wire costs $20 to $50 in sender fees, according to bank fee schedules. Each intermediary bank can add $15 to $50, and the money takes 1 to 5 business days to arrive. Our comparison of stablecoins and wire transfers covers this in detail.

With Codex FX, you trade on one all-in wholesale rate, locked when you confirm the order. Our cost is included in that rate and scales with your volume. For the last step into your bank account, see our guide on how to convert USDC and USDT to USD.

How to Set Up USDT Payments

Setting up USDT payments takes five steps.

1. Choose your networks. Start with the networks your customers and suppliers already use. Nine in ten USDT sit on Tron or Ethereum, so that usually means one or both. Check that Tether still supports each network, because it has dropped some older ones.

2. Decide how you hold USDT. You can use a custodian or run your own wallets. Either way, set approval rules for outgoing payments and keep a list of approved addresses.

3. Set up conversion to fiat. Pick a provider that converts USDT into your bank account and into the currencies you pay out. Check its rates, settlement times, and corridors.

4. Build in compliance. Run know-your-business (KYB) checks on the companies you pay and the ones that pay you. Screen their wallet addresses before you send or accept funds.

5. Keep clean records. Store the transaction hash with each invoice. Record the rate each time you convert, so your books match your bank statements.

If you accept USDT from customers at checkout, our guide on how to accept stablecoin payments covers that side.

What Are the Risks of USDT Payments?

The main risks are that payments are final, that Tether can freeze funds, and that rules differ by region.

A confirmed USDT payment cannot be reversed. There are no chargebacks, so a refund is a new payment. A transfer sent to the wrong address or network may be impossible to recover.

Tether can freeze USDT at any address. By late July 2026, it had frozen about $5.7 billion of USDT across more than 9,500 addresses, according to BlockSec. Screening counterparties lowers the chance of receiving funds that are later frozen.

Rules also differ by region. Tether is not authorized under the EU's MiCA rules, so regulated platforms in the EU have restricted or removed USDT for EU users. In the US, Tether launched a separate token, USAT, in January 2026. It is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank and designed for the GENIUS Act. The Act is expected to take effect on January 18, 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is USDT on Tron the same as USDT on Ethereum?

They have the same value, but they exist on different blockchains. A payment sent on Tron can only be received on Tron, so both sides must use the same network.

How long does a USDT payment take?

The transfer itself usually confirms within minutes, depending on the network. Converting USDT into your bank account can take longer. It depends on your provider and the local payment rails.

Can a USDT payment be reversed?

No. Once a USDT payment is confirmed, it is final. To refund a customer, you send a new payment. Check the address and the network before every transfer.

Should my business use USDT or USDC?

Use the one your counterparties hold, and support both if you can. USDT has the larger supply. USDC complies with the EU's MiCA rules, according to Circle. USDT does not. Our guide to USDC vs USDT for cross-border payments compares them. If you run a payment platform and your customers switch between the two, Codex Par lets you offer swaps at exactly 1:1. You pay a transparent fee, invoiced separately and priced on volume tiers.
